Functional Diarrhoea
Sufferers report frequent and urgent bowel movements and of passing several stools in rapid succession, usually first thing in the morning (giving rise to the expression: the morning rush!).

This is probably the most difficult form of IBS to manage because of its potential for soiling and we have reports of sufferers taken short in local supermarkets and feeling too embarrassed ever to return. These patients can become housebound because the urgency is uncontrollable.

Most cases are less severe but even so, patients have to plan their journeys knowing exactly where the next vacant lavatory is located. Consequently some of them are unable to travel by train, bus, plane or car. They travel with tissues and a change of underclothing.

Additional information about this type of IBS and its treatment can also be found in the IBS Research Appeal's book entitled `Understanding Your IBS'. For order details please click here
